We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.

Would you relish the chance to make a tangible and direct impact to rail passengers?

Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment?

If so, we are looking for two hardworking individuals to join our Rail Resilience team to support the delivery of an excellent response to rail incidents, and we would love to hear from you.

Job description

Everything we do at the Department for Transport (DfT) is focused on connecting people and places. We aim to develop and deliver a transport network that works for everyone. Through our work, we aim to make people's journeys better, faster and easier, both for today and in the future. Rail Group's objective is to lead a world-class railway that creates opportunity for people and businesses.

You will be joining our Train Strategy and Operations Division, the home of expert analysis, advice and specialist support on rail industry operations. This is an essential part of understanding how the industry is performing and whether it is delivering the service the passenger deserves.

As a Senior Rail Resilience Adviser, you will play a key supporting role in improving our rail resilience capability. You will primarily work in one of three workstreams within the rail resilience team: planning, response, or improvements and capabilities, and have the opportunity to work across the portfolio at times. This will provide you with an excellent understanding of resilience risks, whilst developing your expertise and transferable skills. You will be responsible for supporting large projects and delivering important pieces of work. This will give you the opportunity to work with a wide variety of colleagues and partners, both within Department for Transport (DfT) and the rail industry.

These roles require you to be resilient, capable of working at pace and to be happy working in an environment where roles might need to be flexible at times. You will be asked to join an on-call team and expected to contribute to crisis response activities, which will involve out of hours working, unsociable hours and shift working.

If you would like to find out more about what it's like to work at DfT Rail, please click here.

Your key responsibilities will include supporting:

  • Rail resilience planning activities: working with the Transport Security Operations Centre and other modes on risks and commissions, embedding contingencies into response procedures, routine reporting and providing advice on risks, resilience and disruption, supporting the development of plans, procedures and processes.
  • Rail resilience response activities: supporting volunteers and on-call team, engagement with rail industry, helping to gather situational awareness and providing reports and advice around disruption and incidents.
  • Rail resilience improvements and capabilities activities: supporting the development of a Concept of Operations, developing and delivering a programme of training and exercising, taking part in incident debriefs and identifying and embedding lessons, supporting the recruitment of volunteers and on-call team.

Person specification

About you

You will be a confident communicator to engage with peers and senior leaders within and outside of the Department and to produce quality reports and Ministerial submissions.

You will enjoy working collaboratively across different teams and with industry partners to successfully deliver outcomes.

You will display excellent organisation skills and be comfortable co-ordinating workloads and working across projects with tight deadlines. You will work well independently and as part of team and enjoy taking the initiative to prioritising key tasks and solve issues.

You will be resilient and adaptable and have the capability to provide a responsive service and deliver large projects in a fast passed environment.

Additional information

You will have the option to be based in our London office attracting the London salary, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National salary. Occasional travel may be required both inside and outside London, expected to be 2-4 days per month.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
